Tips for your family photos! Louisville family photographer. Louisville, KY photographer

I don’t know about you, but I feel like this time of year is almost as crazy as December!

This season is FULL of events and family get-togethers. From graduations and recitals, to holidays and “just-because” barbecues your weekends are packed! With so many events comes some great opportunities for family photographs!

Let’s face it though, you won’t probably won’t have a pro photographer at every event so here are a few tips to remember to make your photos the best they can be:

  1. Connect - There may not be anything worse than those family photos where everyone just stands in a line shoulder to shoulder forcing a smile. Next time try linking arms, holding hands, put your hand on a shoulder - or as I always joke, pretend like you love each other! If you aren’t comfortable with physical connection, try connecting with laughter! Tell a joke, make a funny noise - giggles are the best way to bring out genuine smiles all around.

  2. Light - It’s best to avoid midday sun that is high in the sky causing harsh shadows and squinty faces. Try to find a large area of full shade - from something like a building NOT a tree! Trees can cause bright spots and dark spots all over faces and clothing which is not flattering.

  3. Background - Pay attentions to your backgrounds! Is there a trash can behind Aunt Frances? Move it! If there is something distracting that cannot be moved, try another location. Believe me it’s worth it! That being said, the background does not need to be anything spectacular for a family photo which is meant to capturing memories of your time together.

  4. Just take the photo - Even with all of the tips above your photos might not be perfect and that is okay! At least you have them. You captured four generations or all of the cousins together before some leave for college, or your kiddos with their aunt and uncle who live across the country. You now have these memories forever!
